Three firms blacklisted for hiring illegal workers

Friday June 6, 2008

PUTRAJAYA: A manufacturer and two firms supplying foreign workers have been blacklisted for hiring illegal workers.

Immigration enforcement director Datuk Ishak Mohamed said his officers conducted an inspection on the manufacturing firm in the Hicom Glenmarie Industrial Park on Tuesday.

“From the inspection of the 150 foreign workers on the premises, we found that 112 Indonesians did not have valid work permits.

“Initial investigations found that the company, which makes handphone casings for export, had been promised local workers by the two supplier companies.

“The list of the names forwarded to the manufacturer includes MyKad numbers, many of whom were said to be from Sabah. However, subsequent checks found that four of these workers had false MyKad,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

A Swedish national working as a factory manager in the firm may also have his working pass cancelled following his involvement in the case, added Ishak.

“All three firms will not be allowed to recruit foreign workers in the future,” he said, adding that they could also be fined up to RM50,000 for every illegal worker on the premises.

Ishak said more inspections would be carried out on a large-scale basis on factories and firms in the Klang Valley following information that many were harbouring illegals.

“It is necessary to continue with enforcement considering that many employers continue to be stubborn by recruiting illegals despite the heavy penalties,” he added.
